Over the years, candles have been used in homes, offices and other spaces to keep the surroundings fresh and fragrant. Though candles act as medium to ensure your environment smells amazing, if they are left unattended they can lead to hazards which can cause great damage. Listed below are some candle care tips for you to follow to make sure you enjoy your candles to their fullest:
Prior to burning your candles
These are the basic steps to do before burning a candle.
The candle wick requires to be trimmed ¼ inch. Why?
This helps the candle to burn properly preventing tunneling and giving out heightened fragrance. Another reason, the already burned-out wick does not fall in the candle and lets your candles be beautiful for a long-long time. You can use any old pair of scissors, a proper wick trimmer or even a nail cutter. Just don’t use knives and cutters. We cut the wicks before delivering it to you so the first one is on us! But after that each burning requires a 1/4th inch sacrifice of the wick.
Burn your candles for a stretch of minimum 3 hours
Always make sure that your first burn is at minimum 3 hours or till the wax liquifies till the edges to prevent uneven burning or tunneling. Reason. It will ensure tunneling does not happen. Wax is not wasted at the edges and you get the full burn time a candle promises. You can make a thumb rule to always burn the candle till the wax liquifies at edges and some more.
Safety tips while your candle is burning
Any burning requires precautions and safety measures. Here are some well known and not-so well known measures.
Ensure that the candle is out of reach of children, pets, flammables or some partners.
Both the children and pets are curious little beings. We do not want experiments or satisfy the curiosity of whether it is hot or not… Place your candle and burn it near and on a non-flammable surface and in plain sight. Make sure that there is no wind or draft where your candle is burning. The flame might be carried by the draft and can cause damage.
Maintain social distancing when burning multiple candles.
If you are burning multiple candles at the same point of time, keep them at a distance from each other to prevent any hazards. Also to prevent candles from deforming and damaging each other. Never touch or move a candle while the max is melted.
The melted wax can drop over you causing damage. Ensure that you keep the burning candle at one place and do not move it while it is still burning. You can move the candle once the wax is solidified and the container is cool to touch.
Store your candles in a cool and dry place.
You might have read this line on many products. Due to our candles being made of natural soy wax and fragrances, the temperature and sunlight can affect both the fragrance throw and burning. Especially in India where sun and heat are a 9 month feature. You can store the candles in a closet, in a cupboard or in a dark room.
When to blow out the candles.
Each of our candles have a unique and amazing aroma and it can be very difficult to part with them. But it is quite important to not burn a candle for more than 5 hours at a stretch. You can blow out the candles, or diffuse them by either using a bell diffuser (very fancy) or if the candle has a lid/topper directly closing it. The next time you want to burn make sure there is a minimum of 2 hours of gap in between. It will ensure the wax is cooled down and the burning is prolonged.
Some FAQs and Queries
What is tunneling?
When wax creates a crater around the wick that does not reach the edges. This prevents the wax at sides from burning properly and wastes a lot of potential candles. The simple way to fix this is to burn for a little longer the next time, till it reaches the ends.

Candle is sweating or the oil is visible?
Do not panic if you see drops of liquid on top of your candles or on the side. This just means that the fragrance oil decided to show itself in a more physical way because it was little more than wax could handle. It doesn’t affect the burning or time.
Discoloration or Frosting on Colored Candles?
Due to using natural ingredients it is a common factor that long exposure to sunlight or change in temperature will cause the color to change a little. But don’t worry it will still look pretty.
Air Bubbles or Moving Wax. When the wax rattles in the jar.
The wax shrinks and expands according to temperature change and sometimes it can either have air bubbles or separate from the jar a little. But it will still burn as it is supposed to and give off its best fragrances.
